College's Women soccer and Mens Baseball reach out to schoolchildren

Hartnell students reached out to the community Wednesday, the mens baseball team reading to Roosevelt Elementary students and the women's soccer team teaching home schooled children to dribble, pass and trap a ball. In a fourth grade salinas classroom, Hartnell freshman and baseball player Eric Hilliker read "Always in Trouble," a story about a mischievous puppy names Toby who likes to eat crayons and track muddy paw prints throught the house. Hilliker was participating in the Salinas Reads program. Once a year, baseball players from Hartnell College visit Roosevelt Elementary School classrooms to read stories to about 600 preschool through sixth grade students. Hartnell players have participated for more than a decade, and have been visiting Roosevelt for four years. The women's soccer team offered a free clinic for about 20 elementary-age children in the Monterey Countyt Home charter school program, which offers home-schooling and independent study. " This is especially great with the baseball team and soccer teams because they show up in their uniforms and the kids really, really look up to them" Coach Teresa said. It's almost as if they are celebrities." Great job Hartnell Panthers.
