For nearly three dozen Hartnell College sophomore athletes their efforts on the field and in the classroom have been like a head-first slide into the next level.
"Most of our fall athletes are moving on, and many of them are going to get some sort of financial package." Hartnell College athletic director Dan Teresa said.
This year Hartnell could have as many as 16 footballl players, three women's volleyball players, six cross country runners, six men's soccer players and three women's soccer players headed to four-year colleges. "Every year is a little bit different. " Teresa said. "This is one of the biggest we have had for fall sports. A sports counselor is available to all Hartnell athletes to help prepare a game plan for an eventual transfer to a four-year school. " Our sports counselor makes sure our student athletes stay on track to graduate." Teresa said. "We have a education plan to make sure they graduate in two years and are able to transfer to the next level. " We have excellent coaches at Hartnell. Our coaches work hard to help their athletes succeed in the classroom and on the field. They go the extra mile for their students." Congratulations to all of our student athletes and their coaches for making this possible . The women played in the Consumnes River tournament. They went 1-2 and played for the consolation trophy against Modesto and lost a close one. Our Womens Cross Country team brought home the Northern California Championship at Crystal Springs. They beat conference champs DeAnza college 74-79. He came in first place with a time of 20:49.
This is the second year in a row Tapia won the Individual Northern California Championship. Later that night our Football team took on Gavilan College. Going into the contest Hartnell was 2-1 and trying to stay on top of the league. Falling behind early 14-0, Hartnell scored 40 unanswered points to beat Gavilan 40-21 and stay atop the conference with a 3-1 record. In a fourth grade salinas classroom, Hartnell freshman and baseball player Eric Hilliker read "Always in Trouble," a story about a mischievous puppy names Toby who likes to eat crayons and track muddy paw prints throught the house. Hilliker was participating in the Salinas Reads program. Once a year, baseball players from Hartnell College visit Roosevelt Elementary School classrooms to read stories to about 600 preschool through sixth grade students. Hartnell players have participated for more than a decade, and have been visiting Roosevelt for four years. The women's soccer team offered a free clinic for about 20 elementary-age children in the Monterey Countyt Home charter school program, which offers home-schooling and independent study. " This is especially great with the baseball team and soccer teams because they show up in their uniforms and the kids really, really look up to them" Coach Teresa said. It's almost as if they are celebrities." Great job Hartnell Panthers.

D.
