Questions To Consider Before Submitting a Proposal for Study Abroad or Domestic Study Travel

The most important part of any study travel program is to plan ahead. At Hartnell College, proposals will be due approximately one year in advance and most faculty will need at least one full semester of lead time to prepare. As this is a fee-based program coordinated with the Workforce and Community Development Center, it is required to have at least 12-14 paid participants per faculty member. Faculty Leaders will be responsible for a variety of tasks, which are outlined within this document.

Interested faculty should be adventurous, flexible and adaptable. They must be knowledgeable about the location of study travel program and be ready to improvise if things donŐt go as planned. They should have experience traveling with student groups. Travel is always full of unexpected events and faculty members should view these unexpected events as windows of opportunity.

Interested faculty should enjoy spending time with students in a setting outside the Hartnell classroom. The prospective faculty member should also like assisting students with matters related to travel such as securing passports, exchanging money, taking security precautions and other related matters. They may also have to deal with homesickness, curfews, family emergencies, roommate problems, and conduct issues.

Interested faculty should also have a sense of humor and be able to plan a flexible program which will hold participant interest.

Interested faculty must be good organizers and be able to keep detailed records. They must also be able to handle funds and provide an accounting of expenditures. In advance of the study travel program, they must be able to gather cost information and develop a budget.

While at the travel study location, they must pay for certain program costs and keep track of all expenses. Of course, they must also teach class; grade assignments; give final exams; administer evaluations; and provide a final report.

Lastly and often overlooked, faculty must have time to devote to a study travel program. They must allow sufficient time for preparation; recruitment; itinerary development; budget; travel arrangements; teaching; and wrap-up. At the conclusion of the travel study program, faculty must submit a report and a financial reconciliation.

If you are the type of person described in the paragraphs above, then you should consider submitting a Study Abroad or Domestic Study Travel Program application.
